Scope & content

The collection contains newspaper clippings from two daily newspapers in Brazil, O Estrado de Sao Paulo (Sao Paulo) and Jornal do Brasil (Rio de Janeiro), and the weekly Opiniao from April 1971 to October 1975. The articles were arranged by topic, including: politics, military, government programs, foreign relations, economy, industries and investments, banking and finance, international loans, trade, minerals and mining, domestic unrest, church, education, social welfare, Indians, geographic regions, and environment. The collection also includes the monthly indices that were mailed to subscribers along with reproductions of the clippings from July 1971 until the end of the service in February 1976. It also includes a promotional brochure about their clipping service specifically on the topic of Indian Peoples of Brazil.

Biographical/Historical note

The Brazil Clipping Service was a subscription service based in Berkeley, California that provided coverage of news about of Brazil. Subscribers received approximately 25-40 pages of reproduced articles each month that had been compiled from three newspapers: O Estrado de Sao Paulo (Sao Paulo), Jornal do Brasil (Rio de Janeiro), and Opiniao. The service distributed articles as early as April 1971, before being officially discontinued in February 1976 due to financial reasons.

Access to the collection: There are no restrictions on access, except that the collection can only be seen by prior appointment. Some materials may be stored off-site and cannot be produced on the same day on which they are requested.
Use of the materials: Although Brown University has physical ownership of the collection and the materials contained therein, it does not claim literary rights.
