Abstract: The oral history project was conducted by students in Prof. Valerie Quinney's History Research Methods class (Hist. 395A) during the spring of 1979. Ten fishermen of Galilee (R.I.) were interviewed. Research papers were written from the project interviews and the research conducted by the students.

Scope & content

Consists of audio cassette tapes, partial indexes, notes and photocopies of articles taken from The Providence Journal, The Narragansett Times, and Evening Bulletin that are about Point Judith and the fishing industry from the 1930s-1970s.

Arrangement

After processing, the records were organized into three series as follows:

  • 1. Student Papers
  • 2. Interview Tapes
  • 3. Research Materials

Historical Information

The oral history project was conducted by students in Prof. Valerie Quinney's History Research Methods class (Hist. 395A) during the spring of 1979. The students interviewed ten fishermen of Galilee, conducted additional research, and wrote research papers on various aspects of the fishermen’s lives or work. Six research papers are in the collection and cover the topics of fishing women; the Champlin families; technological changes in the industry; history of the Fisherman’s Co-operative; weather forecasting; superstitions and folklore; and confidential fishermen observers during WW II.
