Historical note

The State Board of Elections was created per Public Law Chapter 825 in 1901 and was formerly known as the State Returning Board. The Board's authority is vested in the Rhode Island General Laws Title 17 (RIGL, §17-7-1. to §17-7-9.) In 1974, Title 17 of the General Laws of 1956 was amended with the passage of Public Law Chapter 298. This chapter entitled "Rhode Island Contributions and Expenditures Reporting Act" imposed a limit on campaign expenditures used by candidates for general offices and required reporting of contributions and expenditures of all candidates for public office. For subsequent amendments see current updates of the General Laws of Rhode Island (RIGL§17-25-1. to §17-25-30.1.)
