Scope & content

The Colbert papers are divided into six series: Correspondence, Subject Files, Speeches, Miscellany, Classified Official Correspondence, and Classified Subject Files. Separate items are arranged chronologically. Restricted and classified items are included and access is permitted to those with appropriate clearances.

The papers deal primarily with Admiral Colbert's naval career from his days as a midshipman at Annapolis through his last assignment as Commander in Chief, Allied Forces Southern Europe. His views on matters affecting both the United States Navy and the free world naval community and his international friendships are revealed in the collection. Particular areas of interest are international naval cooperation, the United States Naval War College, the Naval Command College, NATO, free world defenses, and the expansion of Soviet naval forces.
