Scope & content

The Newport ephemera collection, created and maintained by the Redwood Library and Athenaeum for reference purposes, consists of materials that were created by or about the people, events and organizations in Newport for specific, limited purposes and were often meant to be discarded unless kept as a souvenir. Some ephemera provides detailed written information, others none, but each has evidential value. Material in the ephemera collection includes flyers, handouts, programs, menus, invitations, promotional literature, post cards, pamphlets, brochures, guides, calendars, newsletters, official reports, commemorative envelopes, cards, maps, directories, catalogues, and posters. This collection has been organized into eleven series, which emphasize various aspects of Newport’s history, society, and culture. General topics concerning Rhode Island history and historic buildings are also included and are found within Series 5.
