Scope & content

This collection consists of one letter and a commission, both signed by William C. Gibbs during his term as governor of Rhode Island. The letter is addressed to Colonel Josiah Whitaker, Adjutant General in Providence on February 7, 1822, regarding commissions sent to Aides-de-camp which needed to be corrected. The commission, dated June 16, 1823, appointed Asa Winson justice of the peace (judge) in Smithfield, Rhode Island. This commission was also signed by Henry Bowen (1785-1867), secretary of Rhode Island.
