Scope & content

This collection consists of a handwritten memoir by Isaac P. Noyes, entitled “Blue-Boat Cruise of 1877,” written on November 17, 1877. This memoir recounts the sailing excursion Noyes and four friends enjoyed on August 23-25, 1877 along the Narragansett Bay. Noyes and his friends, Thomas E. Nudd, Henry G. Place, Charles M. Sheldon, and Albert J. Sunderland, leased a boat, referred to as the ‘Blue Boat’ in Providence, Rhode Island and hired a sailing captain, Ned Grey, to sail from Providence through the Narragansett Bay making stops at Newport, Jamestown, Rocky Point, Fort Adams, and Dutch Island along the way. In this memoir, Noyes describes their daily activities and the conversations shared among the five friends during the trip.
