This collection is comprised of organizational records of the North Kingstown Woman's Club from its inception in 1946 to 2022. The collection includes by-laws, general and executive board meeting minutes, membership lists, program booklets, annual reports, and other information about the club's activities, history and members.

Arrangement

The collection is divided into two series based on the dates of acquisition. Series I was received in 1996 and is arranged by folder type and chronologically. Series II was received in 2023 and the folders are arranged alphabetically by subject and then chronologically. The last item listed in Series II is an index card file, labeled as Box 2, containing approximately 550 membership cards of deceased, resigned and relocated members.

Administrative History

The North Kingstown Woman's Club was organized November 21st, 1946 as a continuation of the North Kingstown Civilian Defense "Open House" club for women during World War Two. Its constitution, adopted February 5th, 1947 states that "the object of this club shall be to form a recognized center for social and intellectual development and to assist movements which have for their objects the civic, philanthropic, and social betterment of the community and to study and discuss topics of public interest, to prompt good fellowship and to advance along lines of general culture." Membership was open to "any woman in sympathy with the object of the club." In its first year, the Club had 72 members. Over the course of the next 50 years, the membership grew to over 180 persons. Initially, meetings were held at various locations such as members' homes or the meeting halls of other organizations before the Club settled on the Larchwood Inn in Wakefield. As of 2023, the club is still active.
