Biographical/Historical Note

Elizabeth Guild Hoyt was born in Providence, Rhode Island, on March 29, 1870, to David Webster Hoyt and Martha Jane (Guild) Hoyt. Elizabeth received a B.A. in 1891 as well as an M.A. in Science in 1893 from Wellesley College in Massachusetts, which included graduate study in astronomy at Brown in connection with her master's degree in science from Wellesley College. She taught in the classical department of Providence High School, which later became Classical High School in 1897, where she then taught mathematics and was head of the department from 1926-1934. Elizabeth died on February 9, 1966.
