Scope & content

The Kenneth A. Galdston papers consist of records related to community organizing and Galdston's education at Brown University. Materials include meeting minutes, notes, agendas, calendars, periodicals and printed ephemera and cover a period from the early 1950s through 2007.

Series I. Organizations contains the records of two organizations with which Galdston was affiliated: The Midway Organization which was based in the neighborhoods around Midway Airport in Chicago and the United Citizens Organization, a lay Catholic organization based in Buffalo, New York.

Series II. Community organizing consists of various guidebooks and collected printed materials.

Series III. Education contains materials related to Galdston's undergraduate coursework, including notebooks and papers, as well as his involvement in athletic, social, and political organizations during his student years.

Series IV. Publications contains popular periodicals and journals relating to community organizing.

Series V. Additions comprises additions to the collection including subject files, notebooks, and diaries related to Galdston's ongoing community organizing work.

Biographical/Historical note

Kenneth A. Galdston graduated from Brown University in 1968. He attended the Volunteers in Service to America (VISTA) training program at the University of Maryland and later the Yale School of Organization and Management. Over the course of his career, Galdston was a community organizer in North Carolina; Chicago, Illinois; Minneapolis-St. Paul, Minnesota; Buffalo, New York; Naugatuck Valley, Connecticut; Merrimack Valley, Massachusetts; and, as the lead organizer of the InterValley Project, helped leaders and organizers build additional community organizations elsewhere in Massachusetts and in Rhode Island, New Hampshire, Maine, and Vermont. The collection contains literature on community organizing, detailed meeting notes, periodicals, class notes from Brown University, newspaper clippings, and appointment books.
