The papers include essays, lectures, and articles from various professors and visiting academics, as well as student files and correspondence.

Scope & content

This collection contains the papers of Elizabeth Weed during her years at Brown University. The files are organised according to the original titles, which appear in quotation marks. All other folder titles were created by the processor. Papers include personal and professional correspondence, published articles and drafts, lecture transcriptions, and student records. The collection is arranged into two series.

Series 1, Subject files by personal name, contains correspondence, articles, newspaper clippings and related material, according to the person to which the file refers. The files are arranged alphabetically by personal name, beginning with “Alonso” and finishing at “Wilson.”

Series 2, Other subject files, is arranged into broader categories, containing correspondence with former students and various articles and texts organised by subject matter.

Biographical/Historical note

Elizabeth Weed was born in Morris Plains, New Jersey, to Marguerite and Edgar Weed in 1940. She received her BA in French Literature at Drew University in 1962, and then went to Brown for her MA (1966) and her Ph.D (1973), both in French Studies. Weed was an assistant professor at Wheaton College from 1973 to 1977, and then returned to Brown as the director of the Sarah Doyle Center. While at Brown University, she cofounded and directed the Pembroke Center for Research and Teaching on Women, as well as Differences. During her career at Brown, Weed has written over 20 publications, more than 30 papers for lectures at various institutions, and she contributes to several boards, committees, and organisations. As of 2016, she is an adjunct professor for the Modern Culture and Media Department at Brown, as well as a visiting scholar for the Pembroke Center.
