Collection Overview

Title: Morris Abner Barr papers
Date range: 1939-1968
Creator: Barr, Morris Abner, 1884-1974
Extent: 1.0 linear foot
Abstract: Morris Abner Barr was an author, lyricist, and poet whose poems tended towards nature, love, God, friendship, and Barr's own life. A craftsman, Barr wrote about his experience creating stools, gavels, and letter openers from the wood of the Sentry Tree in "Immortalizing the Sentry Tree of George Washington." The collection contains his writings, a scrapbook related to the George Washington Sentry Tree, and correspondence with friends and mentors.
Language of materials: English
Repository: John Hay Library , Special Collections
Collection number: Ms.97.1

Scope & content

This collection of approximately 1,430 items, dating approximately from 1939 to 1968, consists of Barr's poetry, prose and selected correspondence. The poetry is mostly inspirational and moralistic, with a wide range of topics including nature, love, God, friendship, and Barr's own life. The title of each verse is usually a good indication of its content, and in some cases the author's attitude toward the subject. The prose is comprised of mostly autobiographical sketches, with some shorter fiction. Some of Barr's texts also quote letters by others; these usually refer to the manuscript in question, to Barr's abilities as a writer, or his generosity as a person. The collection also includes selected correspondence (some of these he later had published along with his own work), as well as a scrapbook mostly consisting of material based on the George Washington Sentry Tree.

In the correspondence one finds letters of thanks for all the help and gifts that Barr has offered, letters of advice including many from Rev. W. J. Thompson, and a few letters critical of Barr's literary abilities from Lucy Malloy, proofreader and teacher.

Arrangement

The collection is divided into the following series:

  • 1. Correspondence
  • 2. Manuscripts
  • 3. Manuscripts by others
  • 4. Printed

Each series is arranged alphabetically by name or title. Most of the poems and prose appear in typed versions (some being carbon copies of originals), with very few corrections or annotations.

Biographical Note

Morris Abner Barr was born March 4, 1884, in Berks County, Pennsylvania. He received four months of schooling at Berks Public School. Barr worked as a building contractor and discovered a mineral water spring when he was excavating the cellar of his home. He named the spring Valley Forge Spring and became interested in mineralogy when he found the site was also rich in gemstones. For "Immortalizing the Sentry Tree of George Washington" (for thirty years he converted the wood from the tree into stools, gavels and letter openers), he was awarded a Doctor of Letters Degree by Bolin Memorial University, at Lake Jackson Conservatory, in Manassas, Virginia. Barr died in 1974 in Royersford, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania.
