Biographical note

Gordon Hall, the founder of the collection, first encountered the propaganda of domestic "hate-your-neighbor" groups in the 1940's. Believing that the activities of such groups warranted constant vigilance, he began to investigate them. He eventually became a well-known expert on the subject, lecturing, broadcasting, and publishing in newspapers and journals throughout the nation. To support his statements, he began the collection of publications which the Brown University Library began acquiring in the late 1980's. Mr. Hall was initially assisted by Ella Hall, his wife, in the compilation and transport of materials.

Grace Hoag, an alumna of Smith College, began collaboration with Hall during the 1960's, assisting in the research and investigation. Mrs. Hoag provided critical assistance, enabling the collection to expand beyond its early emphasis.
