Scope & content

The records document most aspects of the college's administration and curriculum, including admissions, scholarships, the library, buildings, funds, the placement office, and the changing missing of Pembroke College. There is also information about the relationship between the college and the corporation, and religious and other aspects of life on campus. The records are less thorough after 1960 as Dean Rosemary Pierrel wrote shorter reports than her predecessors.

Administrative history

The Corporation of Brown University established the Advisory Committee on Pembroke College in October 1941 in the same act that abolished its predecessor, the Executive Committee of Pembroke College (see University Archives: OF-1B-3zp). This advisory committee most likely merged the executive committee and an advisory committee comprised of Pembroke faculty and administrators, which Dean Margaret Shove Morriss had founded in 1930. The corporation's Advisory Committee on Pembroke College consisted of two corporation, two faculty and four alumnae representatives, and the university president (chair) and college dean (secretary) ex-officio members. The president of the Alumnae Association was later added as an ex-officio member. Although the advisory committee may have had responsibilities similar to the executive committee's, the new committee heard more reports about the administration and mission of Pembroke College. The committee ceased when Pembroke College merged with Brown University.
