Scope & content

The Civil Pilot Training Program records are arranged in nine series and contain the records from the Brown University/Civil Aeronautics Administration program to provide flight training to undergraduate students while they pursue their regular academic study. The records date from 1939 through 1941.

Series I, Brown Civil Pilot Training Program, contains an overview of the program at Brown, as well as at other institutions. The series also includes a comprehensive list of student participants and training coordinators.

Series II through IX contain records from each session of the program, arranged chronologically from 1939 through the summer of 1942. These files include admission applications (for both accepted and non-accepted applicants), medical and insurance records, examinations and grades, government correspondence and regulations, along with various official documents.

Administrative history

Established in the fall of 1939 by arrangement with the Civil Aeronautics Administration of the U.S. Department of Commerce, the program, which permitted undergraduates to receive flying instruction and pursue related academic courses, was originally a civilian program, but later required applicants to state their intention of applying Army or Navy flight training when needed.

Access to the collection: There are no restrictions on access, except that the collection can only be seen by prior appointment. Some materials may be stored off-site and cannot be produced on the same day on which they are requested.
