Scope & content

The Librarians' files includes materials related to the administration of the Office of the University Librarian at Brown University. They are dated from circa 1939 to 1987. The files have been organized into the following series, all arranged alphabetically by topic: Series I. General files includes, but is not limited to, materials regarding the American Library Association, the Association of Research Libraries, the Rhode Island Library Association, and correspondence. These files are dated from circa 1939 to 1963. Series II. Library files contains materials dated from circa 1920 to 1961. It includes materials regarding the Annmary Brown Memorial, academic departments, financial statements, guides and handbooks, questionnaires, reports, staff lists and statistics. Series III. University files includes materials regarding Brown University's Bicentennial, buildings and grounds, various academic departments, the Veteran's College and issues such as the retirement policy, student aid and travel policies. Series IV. General files, circa 1950-1960, includes materials regarding various book vendors, library departments and correspondence. Series V. General files, circa 1960-1979, includes materials regarding the dedication of the John D. Rockefeller, Jr. Library in 1964, the Toogaloo Project, Title II of the Higher Education Act, which concerns persons with disabilities; and various issues such as tuition reimbursement and library statistics. Series VI. General files, circa 1964-1983, includes materials regarding the Annmary Brown Memorial and John Hay Library renovations, the Faculty Library committee and library funds. Series VII. General files, circa 1978-1987, includes materials similar to that found in previous series, as well at materials regarding library gifts, space allocation, the staff development committee, and security issues. Series VIII. General files, circa 1984-1987, includes much of the same materials found in series above, as well as material regarding the Carberry Chronicle, the development of the online catalog, and the Center for World Hunger.
