Scope & content

The Brown University Peace Corps files contain reports, teaching materials, and office files compiled from 1965 to 1967. The files have been organized into two series: Series I. Peace Corps reports and teaching materials includes training materials, chiefly regarding Tunisia, and a nine volume publication regarding the mission and history of the Peace Corps. Series II. Peace Corps files contains materials regarding personnel, Peace Corps publications, and materials regarding a trip to New York in 1966.

The Brown University Peace Corps files have been organized into two series:

  • I. Peace Corps reports and teaching materials, 1965-1967
  • II. Peace Corps files, 1965-1967

Administrative history

The Peace Corps was established by Executive Order 10924, issued by President John F. Kennedy on March 1, 1961, announced by televised broadcast March 2, 1961, and authorized by Congress on September 22, 1961, with passage of the Peace Corps Act (Public Law 87-293). Since 1961, over 200,000 Americans have joined the Peace Corps and have served in 139 countries.

Access to the collection: There are no restrictions on access, except that the collection can only be seen by prior appointment. Some materials may be stored off-site and cannot be produced on the same day on which they are requested.
Use of the materials: Although Brown University has physical ownership of the collection and the materials contained therein, it does not claim literary rights. Researchers should note that compliance with copyright law is their responsibility. Researchers must determine the owners of the literary rights and obtain any necessary permissions from them.
