Scope & content

The collection contains essays, class notes, and sketches by Elizabeth Slater for the Elements of Civilization and History of Art courses taken during her freshman, sophomore, and junior years as well as two folders of notes for typography and graphic arts courses. The typography folder includes a copy of "The New York Times Type Supplement" showing the type faces available in the composing room (undated) and "A Complete One-line Showing of Artintype Faces" by Artintype, Inc. (undated). There is one notebook created by Loren Anthony for his sophomore History of Art course and a copy of the "Rhode Island School of Design Yearbook, 1941-1942".

The collection includes professional graphic design work for the cover of the John Hancock Mutual Life Insurance Company's magazine "The Signature," 1948 May (1:5). The folder contains that issue as well as the issues for 1948 July and August and the company's "The Story of the Pilgrims," 1945.

Biographical note

Loren Reed Anthony was born in Providence, RI on 1919 April 25. The son of James Loren and Millicent R. Anthony, he attended RISD, 1928-1930, taking Saturday children's classes and later attended RISD from 1937 to 1941 taking classes in the Department of Graphic Arts and graduating 1941 June 4. Anthony died 1994 June 19 in Lincoln, RI.

Elizabeth Slater Anthony was born on 1919 July 27 and lived in Saylesville, RI. The daughter of John W. and Agnes E. Slater, she attended RISD from 1937 to 1942, receiving a diploma in Graphic Arts. Elizabeth died 1995 May 17.

Slater and Anthony married and settled in Saylesville, RI.
