Abstract: Maribelle Cormack (1902-1984) was the published author of at least 20 books, director of the Roger Williams Museum of Natural History (1947-1972), and a lifelong educator. Her writing, fiction and non-fiction, reflects her interest in various subjects including astronomy, anthropology, history, and genealogy. Collection materials include manuscripts, correspondence, research materials, lectures, slides, photographs, and the writings of her father, Adam Cormack.

Scope & content

This collections contains typed and handwritten manuscripts, travel journals, a log book, correspondence, printed photographs, 35 mm slides, a slide projector, lantern slides, scrapbooks, academic regalia, oversize charts and posters.

Biographical/Historical Note

Maribelle Cormack (1902-1984) was born in Buffalo, New York. She studied at Cornell University. In 1926 she moved to Providence to become the Assistant to the Director of Roger Williams Museum of Natural History. In 1947 Cormack became Director of the museum, a position which she held until her retirement in 1972. Cormack received an honorary doctoral degree from Rhode Island College in 1966. She wrote extensively and published more than 20 books in her lifetime.
