The collection includes Joseph Livramento’s personal papers, photographs, and clippings, as well as collected papers on Cape Verde, with particular focus on Cape Verdean and Cape Verdean-American history, culture, and music.

Biographical/Historical Note

Joseph Livramento was a professional musician, band leader, and teacher. Born in New Bedford, Livramento lived in New York City before moving to East Providence in 1990. Livramento began his musical career as a member of the Cape Verdean Ultramarine Band Club and went on to perform with orchestras throughout New England and Canada. He then returned to New Bedford to form the Joe Livramento Band. He later joined the Machito Orchestra. He played with many popular singing groups and performed in every state except Oregon and Montana. He was a roster artist in the Rhode Island State Council on the Arts, a member of the Local 802 Associated Musicians of Greater New York, and a former member of the Cape Verdean League Association Inc. in New York City. He died in 2003.

ABOUT THE COLLECTION  
Acquisition: The collection was donated by Isabelle Livramento in 2012.
Processing information: The collection was initially described by Marlene Lopes, Patricia McIvor, and Molly Bruce Patterson in 2019. Publications were removed from the collection and added to the Cape Verdean Book Collection at that time. The collection was redescribed to include additional information by Abigail Standeven, Special Collections intern, under the supervision of Veronica L. Denison, Digital Archivist and Special Collections Librarian, in 2023.
