Abstract: The University of Rhode Island's collection of Pulitzer Prize winning poet Leonard Bacon's poems is an extensive collection of books and personal papers. These include signed books, manuscripts for translation projects and Bacon's mother's babybook for his first year of life.

Scope & content

The Bacon collection includes first editions of many of his works and reprinted poems in pamphlets. A chronological list of printed works in the collection is also included.

Biographical note

Leonard Bacon, the son of Nathaniel and Helen Hazard Bacon, was born in Solvey, New York on May 26, 1887. he graduated from Yale in 1909 and taught English at the University of California at Berkeley from 1910 to 1923. After that he devoted all his time to writing poetry. In 1926, he and his family moved to "The Acorns" in Peacedale, Rhode Island where he lived for the rest of his life. Bacon received the Pulitzer Prize for poetry in 1941 for Sunderland Capture and other Poems. He died on January 1, 1954. Series 1. Manuscripts and Miscellany
Manuscripts and miscellany include Leonard Bacon's baby book, a clipping of a poem he wrote, and dust jackets from three of his books. Also included are a manuscript of an apparently juvenile poem and part of a typed copy of a work done in the 1940s with George Noyes. The items are arranged chronologically.

Series 2. Correspondence
The correspondence includes letters from Leonard Bacon to George R. Noyes concerning Heroic Ballads of Serbia, a translation they were working on. Also included are letters to publishers and letters recommending publication. The correspondence is arranged chronologically and by person.
