Scope & content

Leather-bound album, with Iselin's name in gold lettering on the front cover, 160 pages, 30 June 1906 - 1923, mostly hand-written in ink (in at least two different hands) but also including tipped-in newspaper clippings, photographs, and typed and printed pages. Describing in detail annual cruises with the Eastern Yacht Club, and at least one with the New York Yacht Club, with information on weather, participants and guests. Two pages with humorous poems regarding guests or crew. The final record of "Vigilant" before she was scrapped.

Historical note

William Emil Iselin (1848-1937), banker and yachtsman, was the brother of the America's Cup defender C. Oliver Iselin, and a successful yachtsman himself. He was the final owner of "Vigilant" (built in 1893 by a syndicate that included his brother Oliver), which was broken up in 1910. "Enchantress" was designed by Cary Smith and Ferris, and built by George Lawley and Son, Boston.

1909. Two pages of signatures of Harvard-related visitors to the yacht in New London, including Oliver Iselin, Ralph Lowell and over 30 others.
1910. Four pages of photographs of 'Vigilant', at sail and with crew resting on deck. Also two small photographs of "Emerald", dated 1904. Newspaper clippings regarding Iselin's new yacht "Enchantress".
1911. Printed schedule for race between "Elena", "Enchantress" and "Isolita". Typed list of guests onboard. Printed results sheet for NYYC King's Cup. Typed copy of congratulatory telegram from George V's private secretary regarding King's Cup race. NYYC cruise, with typed list of guests.
1912. EYC cruise, printed and typed sheets. Boothbay to Marblehead race including "Elena." Astor Cup. Many newspaper clippings.
1914-23. EYC cruises, but less detail.
