Abstract:: The Hubert Jennings papers is an extensive collection of materials created or collected by Jennings in the course of his research on the Portuguese poet Fernando Pessoa focused particularly on the time Pessoa lived in Durban, South Africa. Jennings published a book called Os Dois Exílios: Fernando Pessoa na Africa do Sul (1984) and an English version called Fernando Pessoa in Durban (1986). The collection includes drafts of manuscripts, translations and transcriptions of Pessoa's poetry, and correspondence with members of the Pessoa family and with other scholars. The collection also includes Jennings's own poetry, stories and essays in draft and published form, and a five-volume handwritten memoir about his life that he called the "Cracked Record."

Abstract:: The Arthur B. and Sally Bruce Kinsolving papers are primarily comprised of correspondence, articles and essays, and newsclippings, with dates ranging from 1885 to 1951. Letters from Arthur Kinsolving to his wife, Sally Bruce, and letters to Mrs. Kinsolving make up the majority of the correspondence between 1896 and 1945. The other major portion of correspondence are sympathy cards, letters and telegrams for Sally Kinsolving upon the death of her husband in 1951.

Abstract:: Alison Palmer (Brown University Class of 1953) served in the United States Foreign Service (1959-1981) in Belgian Congo, Ethiopia, and Vietnam. Palmer successfully pursued two sex discrimination lawsuits against the State Department, winning in 1974 and 1987. After her retirement from the State Department in 1981, Palmer became the thirteenth woman Episcopal priest ordained in the United States. The Alison Palmer papers are chiefly related to her two lawsuits but also contain materials that document her foreign service career, and family papers.

Abstract:: The Henry Knox Thatcher papers consist of an oil painting of the U.S.S. Constellation, military memorabilia, and three journals and logs kept by Thatcher while on board several ships, including the U.S.S. Brandywine (1839-1841) and the U.S.S. Constellation (1862-1863). The journals reflect ship life, diversions on shore, the social and political climate of his time, and the duties of American ships in the Mediterranean during the early years of the Civil War.

Abstract:: The Herbert E. Walter papers span from 1844-1948 and consist primarily of correspondence, and teaching materials by and relating to Herbert Eugene Walter (1867-1945), Professor of biology at Brown University. The collection includes extensive material on the study of eugenics, then a branch of biology, including correspondence, teaching materials, notes, pamphlets, published materials, and ephemera from eugenics-related professional organizations. Other significant materials include family papers from Walter’s parents, grandparents and extended family who lived primarily in Vermont. There are penmanship instruction books from the 1840s-1850s created by Walter’s father, Augustus Porter Walter (d.1872), who was a penmanship instructor in Vermont. Betsie Ann Brockway Walter described in detail her experience working in a textile mill in Lowell, Massachusetts during 1860-1861 in letters she wrote to her future husband Augustus P. Walter.

Abstract:: The Lester Frank Ward papers in the John Hay Library consists of the correspondence, manuscripts, published writings, and personal library of a noted nineteenth-century American geologist, paleontologist, and sociologist. These materials reflect virtually all aspects of Ward's professional life, including his years of service as a member of the U. S. Geological Survey staff, his activities as a professor at both Columbian College (now George Washington University) and Brown University, and his long career as a writer of scholarly monographs and articles on many subjects. The papers also contain some information concerning his personal life.
