Faculty Symposium: The Nineties: Fin de
Siecle or Vision of the Future?
The Faculty Symposium Committee organized the symposium
"The Nineties: Fin de Siecle or Vision of the Future?" held in the RISD Auditorium
1990 October 12. Coordinated by Assistant Professor of Liberal Arts and Photography
Deborah Bright, the symposium featured presentations by RISD faculty and guest Benny
Andrews on three panels.
The collection contains records of the Director,
Educational Director, Executive Vice-President, and Presidents. The records cover
1905-1965 and the bulk of the records document the Royal Bailey Farnum
The papers (1962-1989) document the activities of the
Curators of Prints, Drawings, and Photographs, Diana L. Johnson (1969-1979) and
Deborah J. Johnson (1979-1988) plus Curator Maureen C. O'Brien
The Eliza G. Radeke records include correspondence,
notes, speeches, a diary (1886-1887) and RISD records, 1860-1942, bulk 1880-1931. Also
included are items documenting the acquisition of the Museum's cast collection and
the construction of the Japanese Gallery, as well as documents recording museum
Rhode Island School of Design. Museum

The Museum Director's Exhibition files, 1948-1983,
provide a varied and uneven source of information for exhibitions during this
period. The records may document the exhibition and/or social events associated with
These records document the presidency of Thomas F.
Schutte, 1983-1992, and include correspondence, published and unpublished reports,
memoranda, meeting minutes and agendas, faculty contracts, accreditation records,
and legal files covering 1982-1993. Louis Fazzano administration records, 1992-1993,
filed with Schutte documents are maintained with the Schutte records.
The Heinrich Schwarz papers document his personal and
professional correspondence, 1940-1953, while at the Rhode Island School of
Art and include records documenting the activities of employees before and
after his tenure, 1926-1942 and 1954-1970.
