Abstract:
The Tillinghast family business records consist of correspondence, accounting records, ships' papers and business books documenting the maritime trade and other commercial activities of Providence sea captain and merchant, Joseph Tillinghast (1734 – 1816) and his son, William E. Tillinghast (1777-1817). The records also include documentation for the firm Gorton & Tillinghast, founded by Joseph Tillinghast and William E. Tillinghast with Benjamin E. Gorton (1765-1822). Other business ventures include real estate investments and involvement with the Potowomut Mill.

Abstract:
These papers span much of George James Adams’s long career as a textile manufacturer at various mills in Rhode Island and chief agent at the Narragansett Print Works. Included are personal, family, and business correspondence, invoices and receipts, inventories, payroll and supply lists, deeds and contracts, and photographs. A large set of letters are from Thomas P. Richmond, a banker of Bristol, Rhode Island, probably affiliated with the Bank of Bristol. They communicate Richmond’s strong abolitionist feelings and include descriptions of slave uprisings such as the insurrection on the ship La Amistad in 1839, meetings of abolitionist societies, etc. Also discussed are Richmond’s other interests, including phrenology, electricity, epidemiology, mesmerism, animal magnetism, and ships.

Abstract:
John Brown (1736-1803) was born in Providence, R.I., the fourth son of merchant James Brown II (1698-1739) and Hope (Power) Brown (1702-1792). He began his working life in partnership with his three brothers (Nicholas, Joseph and Moses) and his uncle as Obadiah Brown & Co., a mercantile firm that traded in rum, slaves, molasses and other goods. The firm was renamed Nicholas Brown & Co. after the death of Obadiah in 1762.
