D. Morse whaling collection contains correspondence, logbooks and accounts, seaman's
journals, merchant's and owner's accounts, reports and legal documents, literary works,
photographs and engravings, as well as newspaper clippings, research notes, ephemera and
other printed materials pertaining to whaling. Generally, the materials date from the
middle 18th century to middle 20th century. This collection is part of a broader
collection of whaling books, pamphlets, clippings and shipping lists collected by
Carleton D. Morse (Brown University Class of 1913).
The William Henry Hoffman Collection on Napoleon I contains over 200 manuscripts pertaining to the First French Republic and the Napoleonic era, some of which are signed by the Emperor, and 400 rare books, prints, art objects, and examples of fine bindings.
Rollo G. Silver (1909–89) was an American book collector and historian of American printing, typography, and publishing. With his wife, Alice, he created a major collection of books and manuscripts relating to Walt Whitman. This collection contains his correspondence, research on publishers and typographers, specimens of type and a miniature toy printing press.
