Abstract:
The papers document Brown University's establishment of an affirmative action program for faculty hiring and promotion under the conditions laid out in the consent decree. Although the consent decree was concerned primarily with sex discrimination, issues of minority recruitment and hiring are also covered in the records. This collection also provides information about the early work of the Committee on Women Faculty (1971-1977), the status of women faculty on campus, early courses in women's studies, and women and minorities in science at Brown.

This collection consists of the papers of Zillah Eisenstein, scholar of feminist theory and Professor of Politics at Ithaca College from approximately 1966 to 2011. The collection documents Eisenstein’s personal life, academic career, and broad research interests. Topics include Eisenstein's experience with breast cancer and her academic interests in global feminism, socialist feminism, neoliberal and capitalist critic, anti-racism, gender equality, cyberfeminism, the George W. Bush administration and the War on Terror. The collection is largely composed of materials related to courses taught by Eisenstein at Ithaca College, including syllabi, assignments, notes and subject files. The Lester Frank Ward papers in the John Hay Library consists of the correspondence, manuscripts, published writings, and personal library of a noted nineteenth-century American geologist, paleontologist, and sociologist. These materials reflect virtually all aspects of Ward's professional life, including his years of service as a member of the U. S. Geological Survey staff, his activities as a professor at both Columbian College (now George Washington University) and Brown University, and his long career as a writer of scholarly monographs and articles on many subjects. The papers also contain some information concerning his personal life.
