The news clippings within this series were collected and compiled by Charles Welsh. The clippings pertain to an array of topics which relate to the political, social, and cultural developments of Ireland both historically and in a contemporary sense. Included are several book reviews of Irish Literature and The Golden Treasury of Irish Songs and Lyrics, an anthology of Irish poetry also compiled by Welsh. This series highlights the artistic movements occurring in Ireland during the early years of the twentieth century and serves as a testament to the importance of literature and art to the state of Ireland

Abstract:
The Lester Frank Ward papers in the John Hay Library consists of the correspondence, manuscripts, published writings, and personal library of a noted nineteenth-century American geologist, paleontologist, and sociologist. These materials reflect virtually all aspects of Ward's professional life, including his years of service as a member of the U. S. Geological Survey staff, his activities as a professor at both Columbian College (now George Washington University) and Brown University, and his long career as a writer of scholarly monographs and articles on many subjects. The papers also contain some information concerning his personal life.

The bulk of the material in this series consists of newspaper and magazine articles clipped by Ward. These items are international in scope, drawn from various European as well as American publications, and the subjects most often dealt with include politics, economics, sociology, literature, art and the physical sciences. Numerous articles are annotated, probably by Ward. Also part of this series are announcements and reviews of Ward's lectures in Washington and Providence, miscellaneous programs, and several reports from the Smithsonian Institution.
