Abstract:
This collection contains magazine articles and photographs related to the career of Augustus A. White III (Brown, Class of 1957) as an orthopedic surgeon. He is a Vietnam Veteran. He served 2 years as an army surgeon a year of which, August 1966-August 1967, he was stationed at the 85th Evacuation Hospital in the Qui Nhon region of Vietnam. During that year he also volunteered during his off-duty time at the St. Francis Leprosarium run by Catholic nuns in a nearby village where he treated patients fighting leprosy. He went on to have a distinguished career as the first African American to graduate from Stanford Medical School in 1961 and held positions in orthopedic surgery at Yale Medical School, Beth Israel Hospital and Harvard Medical School. He has also been keenly interested in issues of race, bias, and disparity in medical care and education. In 2011 he founded Harvard's Culturally Competent Care Education Program to begin combating the unconscious and conscious biases of health care professionals and educators.

Abstract:
John Brooks Sherman (1940-1966), (Brown, Class of 1962) was a pilot during the Vietnam War with the Marine All Weather Fighter Squadron 235 attached to Marine Aircraft Group 11 at Da Nang, Vietnam. He was shot down during a bombing flight on March 25, 1966. This collection contains Sherman's utility knife and wrist watch which were recovered from his body by Vietnamese soldier Nguyen Ý Chí. These personal items were returned to the United States in 2016 after many years of investigation to locate Sherman's body. This collection also contains documentation about the investigation to locate Sherman's crash site, repatriate his remains, and locate any surviving relatives.

Abstract:
This collection contains a scrapbook compiled by Nellie B. Nicholson, Brown University class of 1911. Nicholson is believed to be the fifth Black woman graduate from Pembroke College, the women's college in Brown University, and was a leading advocate for Black women's right to vote. She was an educator in Maryland, Delaware, and Pennsylvania, for over 40 years. The scrapbook includes 172 photographs of friends and family members, Pembroke College campus buildings and women's athletics, house mates at 45 East Transit Street in Providence, and post-graduation travels and work. Many of these include handwritten captions. The scrapbook also includes programs for various events primarily at Brown, ribbons from events, and dried flowers and stems. Materials in this scrapbook date from 1906 to 1917, but the bulk of the items date from 1910 - 1911.
