Abstract:
Thomas J. Watson, Jr., (Brown University, class of 1937) was the President and C.E.O. of International Business Machines (1952-1971). After his retirement from I.B.M., Watson began a career in government service, serving as chairman of the General Advisor Committee on Arms Control and Disarmament and as Ambassador to the Soviet Union (1978-1981). Watson's papers document the period of his ambassadorship to the Soviet Union and his subsequent work in foreign policy matters from 1981 to his death in 1993.

This collection contains the personal and professional papers of Joan Wallach Scott, scholar of French history, women's and gender history, and feminist theory. She is Professor Emerita in the School of Social Science in the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, New Jersey, and was the founding director of the Pembroke Center for Teaching and Research on Women at Brown University. Materials include correspondence, administrative files, conference materials, draft writings, subject files, and print materials dating from 1954 – 2019. Consists of 212 patent medicine bottles and 8 objects related to patent medicine dating from the mid-nineteenth century to the early twentieth century and a binder of slides documenting an additional 30 bottles and 3 objects. The collection was assembled by Dr. David S. Greer, Dean of Medicine at Brown University from 1981-1992 and professor emeritus in the Community Health Department in the Division of Biology and Medicine.

This collection contains the organizational records of COYOTE Rhode Island, a group of sex workers, former sex workers, trafficking victims, and allies, who advocate for policies that promote the health and safety of people involved in the sex industry. Materials include administrative records; special project files such as the COYOTE-RI Impact Survey and Sex Workers Outreach Project pen pal letters; subject files regarding other advocacy organizations; public records of court cases, arrests, and legislation relating to prostitution; and informational zines and booklets. Abstract:
Salmá al-Ḥaffār Kuzbarī (1923-2006), a Syrian scholar, feminist, writer, poet, and women’s rights activist created this collection. Her writing and activism focused on the challenges of being a woman and gaining equal rights in the Arab world and draws from her own experiences. Her academic work focused primarily on Mayy Ziyādah, an early twentieth-century Lebanese literary personality who was a pivotal figure in the Nahda, or modern Arab Renaissance. This collection contains a host of materials related to Ziyādah (both primary and secondary sources). It also documents developing conceptions and interests in the Nahda among scholars over the span of several decades, by way of Kuzbarī’s essays, speeches, and books. The collection also documents Kuzbarī’s work as a feminist for women’s rights in the Arab world and the establishment of the Mabarra Association for Education and Consolation for orphan children. When she and her husband served in the Syrian embassy in Spain, she promoted the Arab literature of Spain. She corresponded with the important writers, poets and scholars of the Arab world. Of note also is correspondence from the poet Nizār Qabbānī. The materials include Kuzbarī’s correspondence and journals, speeches she delivered at various conferences, articles, and press clippings both written by and about her, plays and dramas, poetry, and novels. The materials are in Arabic with some in French, Spanish, and English.
